Maguire, President Emeritus, Claremont University Consortium and Graduate University, as the keynote speaker at CCEJ's 19th Annual Interfaith/Intercultural Breakfast. A lifelong participant in America’s struggle for racial and social justice, John Maguire was a colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and became a life director of the King Center, serving in its initial year (1968-69) as chair of the board. Maguire, President Emeritus of Claremont University Consortium and Graduate University, has been a lifelong participant in America’s struggle for racial and social justice. A colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he was an original Freedom Rider in 1961 and became a life director of the King Center, serving in its initial year (1968-69) as chair of the board.  Currently a Senior Fellow in the Institute for Democratic Renewal in Claremont, John Maguire is engaged fulltime in a range of antiracism and democratic community building projects and activities. He has been formally associated as a board member with the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund since the 1980s. Dr. Maguire was one of the founders of the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute, the nation’s foremost Latino think tank and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, deeply involved in international affairs. He serves on the advisory councils of the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University, the Advancement Project, and the University of Iowa’s R*E*A*C*H program for students with multiple learning disabilities.  John Maguire’s distinguished academic career includes two Fulbright Fellowships, more than 50 articles and contributions to books, and awards from major social, civic, service and professional organizations. He has written and spoken widely on the arts and politics, on issues confronting education at all levels, and most of all, challenges involving human rights and matters of social justice.  |
