Youth and Emerging Leadership

Building Bridges Youth Human Relations Residential Program

In cooperation with the the Long Beach Unified School District, Claremont Unified School District, Snowline Joint Unified School District, Los Angeles Unified School District and CCEJ, there are eight, 5-day residential programs where diverse students address human relations issues around race and culture and how they impact their school communities.  Nearly 1,500 students, faculty and volunteers attend this program annually.  The program develops such skills as team building, conflict resolution, effective communication, prejudice reduction, and building self-esteem.  The program culminates with each student making a personal, sustainable commitment to promoting an inclusive community within their school and neighborhood.

"Talking in Class" On-Campus Dialogue

Diverse groups of 30 middle or high school students spend one day a week for three consecutive weeks in conversation, face to face, about race, ethnicity, culture and values.  Students build communication and leadership skills as they develop understanding and relationships with people different from themselves.  The project goals are to increase individual: self-esteem, cultural/racial pride, understanding and respect for other races; intentions to change race-related and other behaviors, and to identify an action plan for improving and maintaining an inclusive, multicultural school community.  For more information, contact Kimmy Maniquis, Program Specialist, at 562-435-8184.
