All of us at CCEJ are saddened to share the news that Barbara Alpert passed away in November 2019. Barbara and her husband Ray were longtime champions of CCEJ’s work. The couple was honored in 1998 as NCCJ Humanitarians, and received the CCEJ Building Bridges Award in 2013. The Alperts were original members of our Founders Circle, setting up a quasi-endowment in 2005 to ensure CCEJ’s successful future. In early 2019, after serving on our Board for more than 17 years, Barbara joined our CCEJ’s Advisory Committee. She was an active member of our Interfaith Intercultural Breakfast committee, sponsored Building Bridges Camps, and helped grow our Restorative Justice programs through her generous support.
Barbara Rosenfeld Alpert grew up in Chicago, coming to Los Angeles as a high school senior. She met her future husband on a blind date and the couple was married in 1953. After settling in Long Beach, Barbara became engaged in the community. She served as the inaugural chair of the Jewish Federation Women’s Professional Division, and past Women’s Division president. She served on the boards of Hillel, ADL, Jewish Family & Children’s Service, Temple Israel, Heritage Pointe, the American Joint Committee on Cancer, Alpert Jewish Community Center, and the California Conference for Equality and Justice. Barbara was also honored by the national UJC Lion of Judah division. Together, the Alperts supported charitable endeavors across the community, most notably the Alpert Jewish Community Center, the Jewish Studies Program at CSULB, the renewal of Temple Israel, the Long Beach Children’s Dental Health Clinic, the Founders’ Circle of the California Conference for Equality and Justice and years of Building Bridges camps for CCEJ.
Barbara was truly the life of the party, and brought joy and laughter to any room she was in. All of us at CCEJ are honored to have been in relationship with her and her family, and we are keeping them in our thoughts. May Barbara’s memory be a blessing to all who knew her.
