City of Long Beach
Human Relations Commission's Pledge
for Peace and Understanding

"Long Beach - One City"

The City of Long Beach is the most diverse, metropolitan city in the United States (Census 2000).  Long Beach believes that everyone should be treated with courtesy and respect, regardless of their racial background, their nation of origin, the religion they practice, their sexual orientation, gender or disability status.  It is the right of all residents to pursue their daily lives with the knowledge that they will not be threatened with violence or physical harm.

It is in this spirit that the City of Long Beach Human Relations Commission partners with The California Conference for Equality and Justice, and the City of Long Beach Human Dignity Program to support efforts to maintain peace and understanding for our city.  The Human Relations Commission invites participants to thoughtfully consider the following Pledge for Peace and Understanding and respond at www.petitiononline.com/LBpeace/

City of Long Beach
Human Relations Commission's Pledge
for Peace and Understanding
(adapted from the Birmingham Pledge found at www.birminghampledge.com
)

  • I believe that every person has worth as an individual.

  • I believe it is the right of all residents to pursue their daily lives with the knowledge that they will not be threatened with violence or harm.

  • I believe that every person is entitled to dignity and respect, regardless of race or color, their national origin, the religion they practice, their sexual orientation, their gender or disability status.

  • I believe that every thought and every act of racial prejudice is harmful; if it is my thought or act, then it is harmful to me as well as to others.

  • Therefore, from this day forward I will strive daily to eliminate all forms of prejudice from my thoughts and actions.

  • I will discourage racial prejudice by others at every opportunity.

  • I will treat all people with dignity and respect; and I will strive daily to honor this pledge, knowing that the world will be a better place because of my effort.
